Behaviour for Learning

Every opportunity is taken to recognise and celebrate students' achievements in their learning, behaviour and general contributions to school life. Rewards used in Olive Secondary School include: teacher praise, reward points, good news cards, certificates and end of term and year awards. Once students have achieved certain numbers of rewards points, students are presented with bronze, silver and gold star badges in end of term assemblies.

The consequences of poor behaviour include referrals, reports, detentions and exclusions.

Olive Secondary School holds the rights to:

1-      To make clear the school’s statutory power to discipline students and that students and parents will need to respect this.

2-      To enforce their school-behaviour policy – including rules and disciplinary measures.

3-      To expect students’ and parents’ cooperation in maintaining an orderly climate for learning.

4-      To expect students to respect the rights of other students and adults in the school.

5-      To expect students to behave in an acceptable manner which promotes courtesy, co-operation and consideration.

6-      Not to tolerate violence, threatening behaviour or abuse by students or parents. If a parent does not conduct himself/herself properly, the school may ban them from the school premises and, if the parent continues to cause nuisance or disturbance, they may be liable to prosecution.

7-      To take firm action against students who harass or who are disrespectful to school staff on or off premises – engaging external- support services, including the police, as appropriate.

8-      To make judgements regarding sanctions that are appropriate, proportionate, balanced and measured. 

Olive Secondary School’s responsibilities:

1-      To ensure the whole school community is consulted about the principles of the school-behaviour policy.

2-      To establish and communicate clearly measures to ensure good order, respect and discipline.

3-      To ensure the school-behaviour policy does not discriminate against any student on, e.g. grounds of race, gender and disability, and that it promotes good relations between different communities.

4-      To ensure staff are clear about the extent of their disciplinary authority and receive necessary professional development on behaviour strategies.

5-      To support, praise and, as appropriate, reward students’ good behaviour.

6-      To promote the school ethos of acceptable behaviour as that which promotes courtesy, co-operation and consideration from all students

7-      To apply sanctions fairly, consistently, proportionately and reasonably – taking account of the needs of vulnerable children, and offering support as appropriate.

8-      To take all reasonable measures to protect the safety and well-being of staff and students, including preventing all forms of bullying and dealing effectively with reports and complaints about bullying.

9-      To ensure staff model good behaviour.

10-   To promote positive behaviour through active development of students’ social, emotional and behavioural skills.

11-   To keep parents informed of their child’s behaviour, good as well as bad.

12-   To work with agencies to promote community cohesion and safety.

13-   Students of Olive have the right to:

14-   To be taught in environments that are safe, conducive to learning and free from disruption.

15-   To be part of a community where acceptable behaviours are promoted and valued.

16-   To expect issues regarding behaviour to be treated in a proportionate, reasonable, balanced and measured manner.

And have the responsibility to:

1-      To follow instructions by school staff, obey school rules and accept sanctions in an appropriate way.

2-      To act as positive ambassadors for the school when off school premises.

3-      Not to bring inappropriate or unlawful items to school.

4-      To show respect to school staff, fellow pupils, school property and the school environment.

5-      To adhere to the school’s expectations regarding acceptable behaviours.

6-      To cooperate with, and abide by, any arrangements put in place to support their behaviour, such as Individual Student Support Plans and Individual Education Plans.
